The soldiers and the scientist led Kieran into a large laboratory that stretched well over a hundred feet long and wide. White tile and white walls reflected the bright lights that beamed over the space and nearly blinded him. Kieran had grown accustomed to his cell—pure darkness, interrupted by occasions of dim lighting. The brightness of the laboratory hurt his eyes, and he couldn’t make out a lot of the specifics.

It didn’t help that his captors didn’t slow down and allot him the time to adjust. But as they escorted him across the room, he deciphered the broad strokes.

The first horror he noticed were corpses hanging by thin wires from the rafters off to his right. They hung by their feet, and their fingertips scraped the ground, scratching random patterns in the dried puddles of blood below them.

Along the walls, cages held human and infected prisoners. As Kieran passed them, they shook the bars and threw their pale bodies against them, howling and screaming.

He navigated through beds fit with restraints and tubes and beeping machines that furnished the middle of the laboratory. Kieran noticed human men and women and children, as emaciated and malnourished as he was. They lay in the experiment beds, tensing against restraints that held their legs and torsos and heads in place. Tubes and wires prodded into their bodies and dangled out like obscene tentacles that connected to a beeping machine.

Egg-shaped pods filled with green water and floating humans were positioned at the far end of the laboratory.

Kieran saw infected creatures, men and women and children. Dead and alive. Every species and gender and age received the same treatment.

The question was, what progress did Ramses dream of? What made up such horror?

The doctor nearly hopped across the laboratory, rubbing his hands like a greedy child sitting before a mountain of presents. He jogged to a door set in a back corner of the lab and opened it to reveal a twisting stairwell descending into darkness.

“This way,” he said, disappearing down the stairs. “This way.”
